Vampires and alien invasions will be joining Starz’ lineup of original programming next year. Sure, those aren’t original subjects for a TV series, but neither was Spartacus, and that turned out great.
First up is Vlad Dracula, from writer producer J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5). The series combines the famous vampire with his true-life historical basis, the 15th Century Prince Vlad of Wallachia.
Starz’s press release adds, ‘Vlad Dracula traces his evolution from a revered ruler to the world’s most feared vampire, and his slow downfall as he struggles desperately to hang on to his humanity, his wife and his kingdom.’
Joining Straczynski in the project are horror producer Roy Lee, and producer Rob Tabert, whose previous credits include Spartacus, Xena, and the Evil Dead trilogy.
Next up is Incursion, from creator Steven S. DeKnight, whose current series, Spartacus, will be ending its run next season. It’s described as a gritty, action-thriller about an elite military squad fighting in a war against hostile aliens. The plan is to have each season take place on a different planet, as the team moves ever-deeper into enemy territory.
It’s hard to parse anything useful from that description, but the pedigree is good, so we’re hopeful.
