In addition to green-lighting a promising pilot called High Moon from writer/producer Bryon Fuller, SyFy also put in an order for a pilot from film director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, The Last Airbender) and TV writer Marti Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men).
Proof is about a billionaire’s son who, after the death of his parents, offers a bounty on proof that there is life after death. Not sure how you’d stretch that into a long running series, but whatever. ‘Hey, I found proof. Oh, wait, no I didn’t. Well, better luck next week.’
Noxon is well respected as a TV writer, with many notable genre and mainstream credits under her belt. Conversely, Shyamalan’s star has been, let’s say ‘fading.’ After bursting onto the scene with The Sixth Sense, his wonky and repetitive writing seem to attract more detractors with each passing film. His last three films received a 24%, 18%, and 6% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes respectively. Shyamalan has just finished work on a sci fi movie called After Earth, which stars Will Smith (Fresh Prince of Bel Air) and his real-life son Jaden.
Shyamalan has a history of incorporating religious themes into his work, to varying affect; so Proof is in his wheelhouse, though it will likely be pretty preachy if his past work is any indication.
