S.H.I.E.L.D. Characters Revealed

A casting call for the upcoming ABC’s Marvel Universe-set TV series, S.H.I.E.L.D.(I hate having to type that out) has given us a preliminary glimpse at what type of show we might expect.  It sounds very much like a procedural, focusing on a group of agents each with their own specialties.

You can certainly see creator Joss Whedon’s (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Avengers) hand in the cast list; some of the characters are archetypes that we’ve seen in his previous work.

Anyway, according to TV Line, the main cast will consist of:

  • SKYE | This late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.
  • AGENT GRANT WARD | Quite the physical specimen and “cool under fire,” he sometimes botches interpersonal relations. He’s a quiet one with a bit of a temper, but he’s the kind of guy that grows on you.
  • AGENT ALTHEA RICE | Also known as “The Calvary,” this hard-core soldier has crazy skills when it comes to weapons and being a pilot. But her experiences have left her very quiet and a little damaged.
  • AGENT LEO FITZ and AGENT JEMMA SIMMONS | These two came through training together and still choose to spend most of their time in each other’s company. Their sibling-like relationship is reinforced by their shared nerd tendencies – she deals with biology and chemistry, he’s a whiz at the technical side of weaponry.
In typical Whedon fashion, the team’s deadliest fighter is a woman.  Ward could be Jayne from Firefly / Serenity; and does anyone else expect to see Amy Acker (Angel) cast as Jemma Simmons?
Keep in mind, cast lists this early always end up changing as the producers meet actors (and create new characters, or change existing ones to suit them) better and get further into the writing process (and find out that one of their characters just isn’t working).
