Gaiman, Cybermen Return to Doctor Who

The official Doctor Who website has announced that the Doctor’s most frequent protagonists, the Cybermen, will be making their return to the series in an episode to air in 2013.  Further, it was revealed that the story would be written by fantasy author Neil Gaiman (Coraline, The Graveyard Book), who previously wrote the acclaimed series six Doctor Who episode, ‘The Doctor’s Wife.’

The BBC posted a (very) brief description along with a list of the guest stars for the episode:

Starring Matt Smith as the Doctor and Jenna-Louise Coleman as the new companion, the episode co-stars Warwick Davis (Life’s Too Short and Harry Potter), Tamzin Outhwaite (EastEnders and Hotel Babylon) and Jason Watkins (Being Human and Lark Rise to Candleford) as a band of misfits on a mysterious planet…

The Cybermen made their first appearance in the 1966 episode, ‘The Tenth Planet,’ and last squared off with Doctor in the 2011 series six episode ‘Closing Time.’  They were once humanoid being who ‘improved’ themselves by way of technological augmentation.  They now seek to force those same improvements on the rest of the universe.  They were ripped-off rather shamelessly by Star Trek: The Next Generation in the form of The Borg.
