Hideaki Anno, director of Evangelion and Gunbuster, has produced a short special effects film in partnership with Studio Ghibli (Arrietty, Ponyo) entitled ‘Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru,’ which translates roughly to Giant God Warriors Revealed in Tokyo.
The Giant God Warriors first appeared in one of Ghibli’s most famous films (though they didn’t technically become a studio until after its release), Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind, directed by studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki and based on his manga. The God Warriors were monstrous war machines that devastated the planet in the distant past and left the Earth a toxic, polluted wasteland.
The short was created for a special effects exhibit a the Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, curated by Hideaki Anno himself; but it appears it will now be shown along with Evangelion 3.0, the third installment of Anno’s four-film reboot of his most successful work, Neon Genesis Evangelion.
The information came from a new trailer for Evangelion 3.0, which aired on Japanese television after a presentation of Evangelion 1.0. The trailer is followed by a one second clip of the God Warriors walking through a fiery cityscape.
