It looks like J.J. Abrams (Alias, Mission Impossible 3) will be directing the next Star Wars film for Disney. Abrams is just finishing up work on Star Trek into Darkness for Paramount, making him that rarest of birds that has worked on both sides of the great nerd divide.
Michael Arndt (Toy Story 3) was announced as the writer some time ago.
I have nothing against either of the choice, they are both very talented people; but I wish Disney had been a little bolder. It feels like they just picked a random Emmy winner to write and the current ‘big sci-fi guy’ to direct. It would have been cool if they had picked someone relatively out of left field, like Marvel did when it hired Joss Whedon (yes, he seemed to be the obvious choice for fanboys; but at the time, he had never directed a big budget movie and none of his other works had done all that well) and James Gunn (a veteran of Troma); someone with new ideas, kind of like George Lucas when he made ‘Episode 3.’
