New Zealand Mints a TARDIS

Doctor-Who-50th-Anniversary-Reverse-469x469British commonwealth nation New Zealand; small neighbor of Australia, backdrop for The Lord of the Rings, and home to Flight of the Conchords, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the BBC series Doctor Who with a 1oz .999 pure silver commemorative coin.

This is actual, legal tender with a face value of Two New Zealand dollars (which is worth $1.67 US as of this writing). 



The New Zealand Mint is pressing 10 000 of the coins, and will sell them for $155 NZ a piece, for a net cost of $153.  So, if you’re wondering why New Zealand is minting coins in honor of a British TV show, that’s why.
