In an interview with MTV’s Splash Page, Kevin Feige, the President of Production for Marvel Studios, revealed some of their plans for Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What the hell is ‘Phase Three?’ Well, Phase One was all the Marvel movies leading up to The Avengers (Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America). Phase Two, which we enter this summer with Iron Man 3, is all the movies leading up to The Avengers 2. The second Phase will introduce one new property to the universe, Guardians of the Galaxy.
Phase Three will begin after 2015’s The Avengers 2, with the previously announced Ant-Man from director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim). An interesting note from the interview is that Ant-Man is only being made because that’s the property that Wright wanted to do. Apparently, Marvel was so interested in working with him that they were willing to spend millions of dollars for a movie based on a tertiary (and rather silly) character.
Also coming in Phase Three (and this is the new bit) will be a Doctor Strange movie. Doctor Strange (A.K.A. Stephen Strange) is a medical doctor turned sorcerer supreme, who is tasked with protecting the Earth from evil magic users. The Marvel Universe has, by and large, stayed on the science side to explain all its fantastical attributes, so Strange will be a major change of pace. No writer of director has yet been named for the project.
