French company Gaumont International Television is working on a Barbarella TV series. So far, they have a director, Nicolas Refn (Drive, Bronson); and producers Martha De Laurentiis (whose late husband produced the 1968 film version of Barbarella starring Jane Fonda) and Julien Forest (son of Jean-Claude Forest, the creator of the original Barbarella comic book).
The newest addition to the staff is the writing team of Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, the writers of the last five James Bond films (which is interesting when you consider the widely varying levels of quality).
Now we’ll just have to see who they cast in the lead role, an odd combination of highly-skilled secret agent and Playboy bunny. One of the things the movie did well was present Barbarella’s sexuality in a positive and non-sleazy way (while still making it sexy); hopefully with some of the same people involved, we’ll get equally good results.
