Toei Animation has announced a computer animated feature based on the classic manga series Space Pirate Captain Harlock. The film will have a budget of $30 US, which is comfortably on the high-end when it comes to anime.
Captain Harlock (sometimes Herlock) was created by Leiji Matsumoto in 1977. It resides in the author’s famous ‘Matsumotoverse,’ a shared universe which also includes Galaxy Express 999, Queen Emeraldas, Space Battleship Yamamoto (Star Blazers) and numerous other series.
Harlock‘s first anime adaptation was a 1978 TV series, which was recently licensed by Discotek Media.
There was also a traditionally animated film entitled Arcadia of My Youth, released by Animeigo, and another TV series in 2002, Captain Herlock: Endless Odyssey.
