Mark Miller, the man overseeing all of Fox’s Marvel related films, has confirmed in an interview with SFX that the classic X-Men villains The Sentinels will make their first live action appearance in X-Men: Days of Future Past.
The Sentinels, an army of giant robots created by the government to hunt down mutants, have been conspicuously absent from the X-Men films thus far, save for a brief glimps in X-Men The Last Stand, when Wolverine cut off a Sentinel head during a danger room training session.
It would be hard to skip over the Sentinels in this new film. In the comic story the movie is based on, they are the instruments of the mutant holocaust which drives the X-Men to go back in time to change history. Without them, the producers would need to come up with a convincing alternative; and since both good and evil mutants alike are victims of the mutant crackdown, they can’t rely on Magneto and the Brotherhood to fill the gap.
Miller was also asked about Kitty Pryde, who in the ‘Days of Future Past’ comics was the one who actually effected the time travel. On this, Miller got coy as to whether or not she’d make an appearance, “Ach, I cannae get into that [laughs]. As soon as I say something it will turn into a big Internet story. Let me put it this way though: Kitty Pride fans will not be disappointed.” It’s an odd denial, seeing as Ellen Page, who played the character in The Last Stand was officially cast in the new film last week.
