Ninja Turtle Creator is Unimpressed by the New April

Picture 3Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle co-creator Peter Laird recently commented on the news that producer Michael Bay had cast Megan Fox as April O’Neil in his upcoming reboot movie.  He wasn’t very nice.

Said Laird:  “My only exposure to Megan Fox as an actress is through her role in two “Transformers” movies and the wretched (but happily forgettable) “Jennifer’s Body”. It may not be fair to judge her range of acting skills just from those three movies, but I think it is safe to say that there are probably hundreds of better choices for the role of April O’Neil. Of course, her name has promotional value, and maybe that’s what they want. Who knows? I can’t get myself too worked up about it.”

Laird co-created the TMNT with fellow comic artist Kevin Eastman in 1984.  Eastman sold his ownership of the Turtles to Laird in 2008; who, in turn, sold it all to Nickelodeon in 2009.  Anyone who’s read Laird’s comments since then knows that he’s fairly burned out on the property, so it’s not surprising that he isn’t getting ‘too worked up about it.’

Eastman, by contrast, returned to the franchise after many years’ absence, and now serves as story writer / occasional artist of the new comic series from IDW.
