Manga/Anime Series ‘Monster’ Heading to HBO?

Screen Shot 2013-04-25 at 6.12.42 AMApparently, Guilleremo Del Toro (Pacific Rim, Hellboy) is developing a series for HBO based on the manga Monster, by Naoki Urusawa (Yawara, Master Keaton).

Monster is about a young doctor in Germany who, disillusioned with hospital politics, chooses to save the life of a child rather than the mayor when both arrive in the emergency room at the same time.  The decision loses him his social standing; but his real troubles start when the kid he saved grows up to be a ‘monster.’

The series was previously adapted into a 74 episode anime series, which was unfortunately licensed in North America by Viz, who released a mediocre box set of the the first 13 episodes and then forgot about it.

Keep in mind, the odds of a show that’s in development of becoming an actual series are about a hundred to one (and if Pacific Rim hits big, which it probably will, Del Toro may put this aside to make a sequel), so don’t start making your popcorn just yet.
